Out of Hand: Materialising the Digital is an exploration of art, craft,
design and science in the light of ever-evolving technologies,
processes and materials. Such technological advances are changing
the way we conceive of and work with materials, and blurring
boundaries. The results are opening up exciting relationships between
art and innovation, materials and techniques.
The Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences brings together the work
of almost 60 international artists, architects, designers and scientists,
from fields as diverse as sculpture, furniture, fashion, transport and
medicine.

Some of the issues and concepts in Out of Hand are further explored
in this limited edition publication through two essays by MAAS
Principal Curator Matthew Connell and academic Thomas Birtchnell,
and a conversation with Ron Labaco, who curated the first iteration of
Out of Hand in 2013 at the Museum of Arts and Design, New York.
Organised around the seven themes of Analog to Postdigital,
Modelling Nature, New Geometries, Rebooting Revivals, Pattern as
Structure, Remixing the Figure, and Process, Out of Hand is a timely
examination of our increasingly interdisciplinary world in the
postdigital era.
